William Davis painted with the close, naturalist attention associated with Pre-Raphaelite influence — this quiet river scene near Leixlip prioritises accurate observation of light and water over any grander landscape statement.

About this work

A View of Rye Water near Leixlip was painted in the 1850s by William Davis (1812–1873), a Dublin-born landscape painter who settled in Liverpool and worked in the Pre-Raphaelite orbit there. It looks along the Rye Water, the river that joins the Liffey at Leixlip on the Kildare–Dublin border. The original is oil on canvas, 51 × 76 cm, and hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.4129), purchased in 1975. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
