An early work painted in 1919, A Water-Lily Pond shows Jellett applying her training to a natural subject: water lilies rendered as interlocking planes of colour rather than botanical study, the pond surface resolved into rhythm and pattern. It anticipates the systematic abstraction she would develop in Paris in the years that followed.
Mainie Jellett (1897-1944), born in Dublin, studied under William Orpen before training in Paris with Andre Lhote and Albert Gleizes. With Evie Hone she exhibited the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland in 1923, and went on to found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Her work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
