Abstract Composition by Mainie Jellett – Canvas Print
An elongated, rhythmic composition in deep ochres, golds and umbers, its sculptural geometric forms carrying a strong sense of movement across the panoramic format. The structure follows the systematic cubist method Jellett developed with Albert Gleizes, where forms are translated and rotated through a set sequence rather than improvised.
Mainie Jellett (1897-1944), born in Dublin, studied under William Orpen before training in Paris with Andre Lhote and Albert Gleizes. With Evie Hone she exhibited the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland in 1923, and went on to found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Her work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
