Carrick Castle (Ormond Castle) by Thomas Sautelle Roberts Art Print

A fisherman waits over his line where the Suir slides past Ormond Castle in this 1796 aquatint print — Carrick-on-Suir's Tudor manor, built in the 1560s by Thomas Butler, Earl of Ormond, in hope of welcoming his cousin Elizabeth I. She never came; the finest Tudor house in Ireland still stands. Washerwomen and cattle share the shallows, smoke drifts from the chimneys, and a sloop makes upriver past the castle walls.

Thomas Sautelle Roberts (c.1760–1826), born in Waterford, trained as an architect before turning to landscape painting. Between 1795 and 1799 he published twelve aquatint views of Ireland's southern cities and rivers — this plate, engraved in London by John William Edy, titled simply 'Carrick Castle'. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1789 and was among the founding members of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1823.
