The Entrance to Waterford Harbour by Thomas Sautelle Roberts Art Print

Surf curls into a sandy cove at the mouth of Waterford Harbour in this 1796 aquatint print by the Waterford-born painter Thomas Sautelle Roberts. Cottages and a ruined tower hold the headland above, rowing boats lie drawn up beside a small monument on the strand, and a lone sail runs for the open channel where a distant beacon marks the far shore. Of the twelve views Roberts published of Ireland's south, this is the wildest — more weather than architecture.

Thomas Sautelle Roberts (c.1760–1826), born in Waterford, trained as an architect before turning to landscape painting. Between 1795 and 1799 he published twelve aquatint views of Ireland's southern cities and rivers — this plate engraved in London by John William Edy. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1789 and was among the founding members of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1823.
