Moore Street, Dublin, around 1930. A barrow piled with cabbages and oranges, a child holding on to a wheel almost as tall as she is, a small dog underfoot. Five conversations are happening at once and no one is going anywhere.
Fruit Market is Michael Healy's Dublin — a pastel from the body of street drawings he made in the off-hours from his stained-glass work, recording the traders and shoppers of the city he had lived in all his life. Drawn around 1930, it brings the chromatic intensity of his church windows down to a sheet of paper: deep cobalt ground, smoky purples, a sudden lift of orange and red across the produce. The figures press in around the cart in a tight, almost choreographed circle.
It is a small picture that holds an entire street.
Michael Healy RHA (1873–1941) was born in Dublin and became one of the founding masters of Irish stained glass — a co-operative artist at An Túr Gloine whose windows are found in churches across Ireland and beyond. His work is hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland and major Irish collections.
