In 1915, Orpen painted Idina Wallace — and the man who commissioned it wasn't her husband. Sir James Dunn, a millionaire industrialist smitten with Idina, paid £750 for Orpen to paint her full-length, in black, against a lamp-black background. It was an exorbitant sum at the time. The result was considered one of the finest portraits of Orpen's career — a lithe, composed figure in silk, looking out from the canvas with complete self-possession. Idina was the daughter of the 8th Earl de la Warr and became one of the most talked-about women of her generation — beautiful, wealthy, and entirely on her own terms. She would go on to marry five times. In 1915, she was twenty-two years old and Orpen caught her exactly at that moment: before everything, already untouchable. The painting sold at Sotheby's London in 2013 for nearly £1 million — the most valuable Orpen portrait ever sold at auction. This archival giclée print is made on heavyweight fine art paper with fade-resistant inks, built to last. Free worldwide shipping. Delivered in 2–5 business days.
