Loch Katrine had been a major tourist draw since the early 1800s, when Walter Scott's poem The Lady of the Lake made the loch famous across Britain. Lavery gives the scene human scale with that tiny sketching figure in the foreground — possibly his future second wife, Hazel Martyn, whom he would marry the following year.
Like several of the Glasgow Boys, Lavery's style shifted over his career from the tighter, "broken" square brushwork of his early pictures toward something smoother and more fluid, an evolution he credited directly to Whistler's influence. This painting, expansive yet intimate, shows that later style in full — the scale of the Highlands held in check by the humanity of one figure at its centre.
The original hangs in the National Galleries of Scotland (accession NG 2135), presented to the collection by Mrs Annie Dunlop from the estate of George B. Dunlop in 1951.
