Orpen painted Night twice. The first is a solitary figure at a window — still, spare, one person alone with the dark. This is the second version, and it tells a different story.
Two figures now, close together in a warm interior. One is seated, turned toward the window, the night pressing against the glass. The other stands behind. The convex mirror on the wall — a device Orpen returned to throughout his career, borrowed from Van Eyck — catches the room in miniature. Everything is contained, domestic, quietly charged.
Where Night is about solitude, Night No. 2 is about company — the particular feeling of being with someone in a room while the world outside goes dark. Orpen understood that difference and painted both.
This archival print is made on heavyweight fine art paper with fade-resistant inks, built to last.
