September 9th, every year. Pilgrims walking the ancient ground at Clonmacnoise — circling the ruins, honouring St. Ciarán, keeping a tradition that had endured for over a thousand years. George Petrie was there to watch it end.
Painted in graphite and watercolour between 1843 and 1846, this is one of the great elegiac images of Irish culture — the last gathering before the Famine broke the pattern forever. O'Rourke's Tower, the Cathedral's north façade, the Cross of the Scriptures. The evening light. The figures moving slowly through the ruins of a civilisation that had once made Ireland the centre of European learning.
Petrie (1790–1866) was not just a painter. He was an antiquarian, a collector of Irish music, and a man who understood that what he was recording was disappearing. This painting is why the National Gallery of Ireland kept it.
Some subjects deserve a wall. This is one of them.
