The Siege of Derry, 1689

This finely engraved aerial view looks down over the walled city of Derry as the River Foyle winds past its star-shaped fortifications, with the encamped armies and siege lines drawn out across the surrounding countryside. In 1689 the city shut its gates to the forces of James II and held out for 105 days — one of the longest sieges in British and Irish history — giving rise to the enduring cry of “No Surrender.” The siege was finally broken when relief ships forced the great boom across the Foyle and reached the starving city. About the Artwork

Titled Belagerung Londonderry in the original, this bird’s-eye view was created by an unknown Netherlandish engraver in the late 17th century, when Dutch and Flemish print shops led Europe in the art of the topographical war map. Rich in detail — from gun batteries and fortified bastions to the scale bar along its lower edge — it records the siege army by army and bastion by bastion, a striking document of a defining moment in the Williamite War in Ireland.
