Collection: Frederic William Burton

Frederic William Burton (1816–1900) was an Irish painter celebrated for his romantic and historical watercolour works. A master of detail and emotion, he often drew inspiration from literature and medieval themes. His most famous painting, The Meeting on the Turret Stairs (1864), captures a poignant, forbidden love scene and remains one of Ireland’s most beloved artworks. Burton later became director of the National Gallery in London, where he played a key role in expanding its collection.
