Shireen — the Christian queen who followed the Persian king Khosrow II into exile and back, and who lives in Persian literature as the very emblem of loyalty and love. Sir Frederic William Burton painted her with the same tenderness he brought to The Meeting on the Turret Stairs, voted Ireland's favourite painting.
Her story is one of resilience: much more than a royal consort, Shireen shared her husband's exile through political upheaval, returned by his side, and helped shape the course of a reign — a subject whose devotion transcends borders and centuries.
Sir Frederic William Burton (1816–1900), born in County Wicklow and raised in County Clare, was one of Ireland's most accomplished painters and later Director of the National Gallery, London. In Shireen he brings his Irish romantic sensibility to a subject drawn from far beyond it.
