Roderic O'Conor painted at Pont-Aven in Gauguin's circle and never fully returned to Ireland; Nathaniel Hone the Younger worked at Barbizon and in the open air for years before settling at Malahide; Walter Osborne carried the loose, light-filled handling into Dublin streets and back gardens; John Lavery built a career on it.

What they share is an interest in light rather than incident — weather, water, the colour of an ordinary afternoon. This collection gathers the Irish impressionist tradition and the painters who worked at its edges.
