Lavery first visited Tangier in 1891 with fellow Glasgow artists Arthur Melville and Joseph Crawhall, and kept returning almost every year after — by the turn of the century he'd bought a house within walking distance of the sea. Painted around 1910, On The Sands shows the beach stretching east of the city: two elegant figures and a young girl sheltering under a purple parasol, two more strolling further down, and at the waterline a muleteer cooling his animals in the surf while a passing steamer trails smoke on the horizon. The figures were likely painted from Lavery's regular model Mary Auras and his own daughter Eileen, twenty years old at the time.
Lavery's love of beaches and water — Morocco, the South of France, Scotland — traced back to the influence of his early supporter James McNeill Whistler. But where Whistler's coastal scenes stayed cool and northern, Lavery pushed the colour further: ochre sand churned near the shore, turning turquoise, green, then deep violet toward the horizon — heat and humidity Whistler's Atlantic light never had to contend with.
