Lavery — Summer, Sport and the Sands

In the summer of 1885 Lavery painted The Tennis Party at Cartbank, near Glasgow — it is in Aberdeen now — and A Rally and Played!! beside it. Forty-four years later he was back at the net, at the Hôtel Beau Site in Cannes. In between came the Glasgow exhibition of 1888, whose small pictures won him the commission to paint the Queen’s state visit, Florida in the winter of 1926–27, and the sunbathers of Palm Springs in 1936, painted at eighty.

The subject never changed: people at their ease, in strong light. That is what makes fifty years of pictures hang as one wall.
