Egerton Coghill's view of Castletownshend captures a quiet West Cork evening in 1903 — soft light rolling over heathered hills, an old track winding through the landscape, and the lyrical stillness that defines his best work.

Coghill (1853–1921) was a Cork-born painter who spent much of his life in Castletownshend, returning again and again to the same landscapes with a poet's patience. This painting is among his most celebrated.
