She dared to see Ireland differently—now you can too.

Composition (Chessboard) 1925

Mainie Jellett's bold cubist work breaks Irish art wide open with its geometric precision and dancing colour. Created in 1925, this composition marked a revolutionary moment when abstract thinking was barely whispered in Dublin. Bring this fearless vision home and reconnect with the Ireland that refused to stand still.

About the Artist

Mainie Jellett (1897–1944) was one of Ireland's first abstract artists, studying under André Lhote in Paris and returning to Dublin with radical ideas. Her cubist explorations scandalized conservative Irish society—the Archbishop himself weighed in on her work. Despite fierce resistance, she exhibited fearlessly, opened her studio to young artists, and fundamentally changed what Irish art could be. Her legacy is quiet defiance.
