In Poe's William Wilson, a man is haunted across Europe by his double — a figure who looks exactly like him, speaks with his voice, and refuses all power for itself. It wants only to obstruct. To prevent. To follow him into the dark and watch.

Clarke drew this in 1923 and understood the story completely. A lone cloaked figure advances through a vaulted archway while shadowed watchers press in from every margin. You cannot tell if the figure knows it is being followed. That uncertainty is the whole point.

George Russell called Clarke probably the ideal interpreter of Poe. This image is the reason why.

About Harry Clarke (1889–1931)

Dublin-born and trained in the Arts and Crafts tradition, Clarke brought the intensity of stained-glass design into illustration — intricate patterning, dramatic chiaroscuro, and a darkness drawn from medieval craft and Symbolist literature. He died of tuberculosis at 41. The work never went out of print.

Myself No Power

A cloaked figure moves through a vaulted archway while something watches from the margins. Clarke drew this for Poe's William Wilson in 1923 — the story of a man haunted by his own double, a conscience that refused all power for itself and wanted only to follow. You cannot tell if the figure knows it is being watched. That uncertainty is the whole point.
