Roderic O'Conor painted this in Paris, far from Connemara, looking back at himself as an artist caught between two worlds.

Roderic O'Conor Self-Portrait, 1903

O'Conor stares directly outward in this 1903 self-portrait, rendered in bold post-impressionist brushstrokes and deep ochres and greens. Painted while he was establishing himself in the Paris art scene, this work captures a man claiming his place among Europe's modernists. This is your chance to bring home the work of Ireland's most daring painter of that era.

About the Artist

Roderic O'Conor (1860–1940) was born into a landed family in Roscommon but became one of Ireland's most uncompromising modernists. He moved to Paris in his thirties and worked alongside Van Gogh's circle, developing a highly personal expressionist style that Irish galleries largely ignored during his lifetime. O'Conor lived for art and conviction, painting in Brittany and the south of France, never chasing approval. He died in relative obscurity, his work only recognised decades later.
