Mainie Jellett's The Virgin of Éire as an archival print — the Madonna and Child flanked by Saint Patrick and Saint Brigid, one of the landmark works of Irish modernism.

Painted in the early 1940s and held by the National Gallery of Ireland, it fuses the clarity of medieval Irish art with the Cubist rhythm of colour and form Jellett brought back from Paris. It was shown at the inaugural Irish Exhibition of Living Art in 1943, whose committee she chaired.

Mainie Jellett (1897–1944), born in Dublin, studied under William Orpen before training in Paris with André Lhote and Albert Gleizes. With Evie Hone she exhibited the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland, in 1923.

About this work

The Virgin of Éire was painted by the Irish artist Mainie Jellett (1897–1944) in the 1940s. It shows the Madonna and Child at the centre, flanked by Saint Patrick and Saint Brigid, the figures built from the rotated cubist planes Jellett learned in Paris under Albert Gleizes — which is why it is often described as the Irish cubist Madonna. It was selected for the first Irish Exhibition of Living Art in 1943, an organisation Jellett chaired. The original is oil on canvas, 64 × 92 cm, and hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.4319), bequeathed in 1978. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
