The poet Dora Sigerson, head tilted and gaze lifted, in an oil portrait by John Lavery, 1919.

She rests her chin on her hand and looks up and away, a loose grey-green blouse falling from the shoulder against dark foliage — the pose of a poet listening for the next line. Dora Sigerson Shorter (1866–1918), Dublin-born, wrote ballads of the 1916 Rising and its aftermath; Lavery's portrait is dated 1919, the year after her death. The canvas measures about 75 × 63 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

About the Artist

Sir John Lavery (1856–1941), born in Belfast and trained in Glasgow and Paris, was among the most sought-after portraitists of his day. His work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
