About this work
Played!! was painted in 1885 by the Belfast-born artist Sir John Lavery (1856–1941) and is signed and dated. A young woman lunges to return a serve, caught mid-stroke in one of the earliest known depictions of lawn tennis, a game Major Walter Clopton Wingfield had invented only in 1874. Lavery, back from his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris, was taken by the new sport and painted the picture after a summer visit to a friend's house in the suburbs of Glasgow, where a tennis court had been laid out. Known until then for portraits and society subjects, he chose a modern, naturalistic subject that was considered avant-garde at the time. The original is an oil painting and was sold at Christie's in London; we know of no public collection that holds it. He painted one other version of the scene, a watercolour titled A Rally, which is in the Glasgow Museums collection. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
