Rows of plain crosses, a small group of women tending the graves, and beyond them a steam train crossing green country — Sir John Lavery’s The Cemetery, Étaples, painted in 1919.
Étaples, on the coast south of Boulogne, was the British Army’s great base camp and hospital town in France, and its military cemetery is the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the country. Lavery painted it for the Women’s Work Section of the Imperial War Museum, which commissioned him to record women’s work in France at the end of the war. The canvas, 52 × 72 cm, is in the collection of Imperial War Museums, London (Art.IWM ART 2884).
A picture of remembrance — for November, for a family with a name on a Commonwealth headstone, or for a study of First World War history. Every print is open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide. See the full John Lavery collection.
