Helen Mabel Trevor spent most of her working life in Brittany and Paris rather than Ireland, and this 1892 oil is a good reason why. The elderly woman she paints - the fisherman's mother of the title - is given the same weight and seriousness a formal society portrait would get, her rosary beads catching the light as a quiet marker of devotion.

Trevor was one of a wave of artists drawn to Brittany at the close of the nineteenth century, pulled in by a way of life that felt untouched by the industrial world. Elderly women like this one were seen as the keepers of that world - its customs, its rituals, its faith - and painters returned to them again and again as subjects worth taking seriously rather than sentimentalising.

The original hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland, bequeathed by the artist herself in 1900.
