One of a series from Hennessy's later career, when the Kilkenny-born painter turned from rustic scenes to elegantly dressed women set in the French countryside; A Spring Fantasy (1880) and With the Birds (1883) belong to the same group.

Part of a series painted during the 1870s and 1880s, "The Flowers of May" highlights Hennessy's artistic evolution from his earlier focus on rustic life to a more refined portrayal of the French countryside. Similar works from this period include A Spring Fantasy (1880), A Visit to the Peacock (1880), and With the Birds (1883).
