A young prince in a white ruff and a robe of dark blue and gold stands with a dagger in one hand and a fan in the other. At his feet, a grave lies covered in flowers. Behind him, his father and mother watch in profile, the king's finger raised to his lips as if to keep the room silent. Red, gold, green and blue ornament burns around them. The panel is 34 cm tall, and Harry Clarke made it in 1917.

The colour is the story. Clarke layered flashed ruby glass beneath flashed blue, acid-etched the surfaces to thin the colour wherever light was wanted, and drew the figures in oxide paint on the top sheet. Lit from behind, the blues deepen and the ruby glows through them.

About this work

The Song of the Mad Prince was made by the Irish stained-glass artist Harry Clarke (1889–1931) in 1917, after Walter de la Mare's poem of the same name from Peacock Pie, a poem of grief for a dead beloved. Clarke made it for his friend and patron Thomas Bodkin, later Director of the National Gallery of Ireland. The original is a miniature stained-glass panel, 34.3 × 17.7 cm, set in a James Hicks cabinet with a small light behind the glass. Bodkin left it to his daughter Elizabeth when he died in 1961, and the National Gallery of Ireland purchased it in 1987 (NGI.12074), where it remains in the collection. Clarke drew the prince again for the 1920 Harrap edition of The Year's at the Spring. This canvas print is made to order and shipped worldwide.
