Lavery painted this in 1884, during his early years studying in Paris, at the artists' colony of Grez-sur-Loing near Fontainebleau — a village where young painters set up easels in the surrounding fields to work en plein air. Larger and more ambitious than anything he'd attempted before, the painting was heavily influenced by Jules Bastien-Lepage and meant to show off everything Lavery had just learned in France.

The composition splits into three distinct passages, each painted with a different technique: a young girl seated on a wheelbarrow beside a watering can, an older girl leaning on a fence between the trees, and both of them watching a boy out on the river in a boat, oar in hand, with a stone bridge behind him.

The painting is held by National Museums NI (Ulster Museum), catalogue number BELUM.U67, and was included in the exhibition Light From The West.

About this work

Under the Cherry Tree was painted in 1884 by the Belfast-born artist Sir John Lavery (1856–1941) at Grez-sur-Loing, a village on the river Loing south of Fontainebleau where artists had gathered since the 1860s. It was first shown at the Glasgow Institute in 1885 as On the Loing: An Afternoon Chat. Lavery kept it, and it came to Belfast when he gave a group of his paintings to the city in 1929. The original is oil on canvas and is held by National Museums NI in the Ulster Museum (BELUM.U67). Late in the 1890s he returned to Grez and painted almost the same view again in The Bridge at Grez. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.

Questions about this print

Where is the original Under the Cherry Tree by Sir John Lavery?
It is held by National Museums NI in the Ulster Museum in Belfast (BELUM.U67), an oil on canvas dated 1884. Lavery gave a group of his paintings to Belfast in 1929, and this large canvas, which he had kept, came to the city then.

What did Lavery first call it?
When it was first shown at the Glasgow Institute in 1885 it was titled On the Loing: An Afternoon Chat. The Loing is the river at Grez-sur-Loing, near Fontainebleau, where he painted it.

What does the painting show?
A young girl seated on a wheelbarrow beside a watering can, an older girl leaning on a fence between the trees, and a boy out on the river in a boat, oar in hand, with a stone bridge behind him. The composition divides into three distinct areas, and Lavery used a different technique in each.

What sizes and frames are available, and what does it cost?
This is a square image, made at 30 × 30, 50 × 50 and 70 × 70 cm, unframed or framed in black, white or natural wood, and at 100 × 100 cm, unframed only. The size and frame selector on this page shows the exact price of every option. Frames arrive ready to hang with shatter-resistant glazing, and the paper is archival, acid-free matte with pigment inks. Every size and price is listed on the print prices, sizes and framing page.
