Pont-Aven, late 1891. O'Conor had only just arrived, and within six months this still life became something more than a study of jugs and flowers — it's the painting where his signature "striping" technique first reached full maturity.
The objects are all local: two hand-painted Quimper faïence jugs, a bottle of farmhouse cider, a glass of wild roses. But it's the handling that matters. O'Conor lays down bold, rhythmic bands of pigment, mostly vertical, catching a shaft of window light from just outside the frame. The effect disrupts any straightforward reading of the scene, pulling attention instead to the rhythm of the brushstrokes themselves. It's a direct response to Vincent van Gogh, whose recently exhibited late paintings O'Conor had just encountered in Paris — work he later described as “wonderful expressions of character pushed to the point of hallucination.” Of the eighteen "striped" paintings O'Conor is known to have made in this style, only around a dozen survive in private hands; the rest are held in major museum collections worldwide.
Roderic O'Conor (1860–1940) was born in County Roscommon and became one of the few Irish painters working at the centre of the Pont-Aven school alongside Gauguin. His work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland, the Tate, and major collections worldwide.
