Pont-Aven, circa 1896. A rustic still life: Breton earthenware jugs and a scatter of apples, laid out with the same bold, unmixed colour O'Conor was absorbing from Gauguin's circle at the time.
Unlike the softer academic still lifes O'Conor had trained in, this one refuses to blend. Thick, directional strokes of colour sit side by side rather than merging, a technique shared by contemporaries working in and around Pont-Aven in the mid-1890s, including Gauguin, Maurice Denis and Émile Bernard. The original was gifted to the National Gallery of Ireland in 2003, having previously sold at Sotheby's London.
Roderic O'Conor (1860–1940) was born in County Roscommon and became one of the few Irish painters working at the centre of the Pont-Aven school. His work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland, the Tate, and major collections worldwide.
